South African Study Permit

In this section you will find an up-to-date summary of requirements and documents needed in order to apply for a Study Permit for your child.

 

Study Permits are compulsory for children going to school from grade 1 onwards and is school/college/university specific. Should your child change educational facility, you will need to obtain a new study permit. Conversely, if you want to take up any adult education, be aware that you will need a study permit for certain courses (check with your educational institution about this).


In order to apply for a Study Permit, you will have to submit Form BI-1738 (Application for Temporary Residence permit), as well as some supporting documentation. Form BI-1738 Can be downloaded here or alternatively picked up at Home Affairs. The supporting documentation currently includes:

  • Passport valid for at least 30 days after expiry of intended stay
  • A letter from the relevant institution confirming provisional aceptance and the duration of the course
  • In case of a minor (under 21), written permission by both parents or sole custody parent
  • The particulars of the person in South Africa who will act as the minor's learner's guardian and a confirmatory letter from the intended guardian
  • Proof of medical cover recognised in South Africa
  • Proof of sufficient funds to cover tuition fees, subsistence and incidental costs  
  • A medical certificate
  • A radiological report
  • Full birth certificate for each dependent child
  • Marriage certificate or Affidavit (cohabiting life partners)
  • Police clearance certificates in respect of all countries where person resided one year or longer (for persons 18 years old +)
  • If applicable: Divorce decree, Proof of Court order awaiting custody, Death certificate with respect to late spouse, Proof of legal adoption, Proof of legal separation order, Vaccination certificate
