When bringing pets to South Africa it is a good idea to use a reputable pet relocation company which can assist you with comfortable travel arrangements for your pet. They will also inform you about pet import regulations and required paperwork, which will differ depending on your country of origin.

Many South Africans keep dogs (not least for protection), and it is not unusual for a family to have 2 or more dogs. Alsacians (German shepherds), labs, ridgebacks and Jack Russel terriers are particularly popular. Most owners of rental properties will not mind you having pets, but do make sure that this is stipulated in the lease.
If you decide to buy a pet in South Africa, consider adopting one from the Domestic Animal Rescue Group (DARG) in Hout Bay. They rescue abandoned and abused animals and try finding new good homes for them. Call DARG on 021 790 2050 to arrange an appointment.
