It is always easier to employ a domestic worker recommended by a colleague, friend, landlord or previous tenant. Should your domestic worker work more than 24 hours a month, you will have to register with the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF). Both Employer and Employee must be registered with UIF and it is the employer’s responsibility to ensure that this registration has been completed. For more information and UIF registration forms you can visit www.labour.gov.co.za

Salary for domestic workers ranges from R 110 to R 180 per day excluding transport and lunch allowance. It is customary to either offer lunch or a monthly lunch allowance. You should negotiate monthly salaries depending on whether your Domestic stays with you or not, how many days he/she works and what specific work she/he does. Further it is also customary to give your domestic a Christmas bonus equivalent to 1 month’s salary, or a smaller amount if she/he worked for you less than 1 year.       South African Law prescribes minimum wages for Domestic workers. For current minimums please check www.labour.gov.co.za.
