If your domestic worker works for you more than 24 hours a month, it is your obligation to register yourself and your domestic worker with the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF). Once registered, you and your worker will each make monthly UIF contributions of 1% of total monthly renumeration payable to the employee. Total monthly renumeration includes wages, transport, lunch and accommodation allowances, overtime etc.
If your worker loses her job, she will be entitled to receive financial aid from the UIF.
UIF registration and payment of contributions is mandatory and non-compliance may result in fines and prosecution, so do not delay it.
Registering with UIF
Registration is relatively simple and consists of 2 forms, one for employer and one for employee. It can be completed online, via email, phone, fax or in person at the nearest Labour Centre. See detailed instructions on how to register with UIF here.
Download Form UI-19 to register your domestic employee here and Form UI-8D to register yourself as an employer here.
Paying UIF contributions
There is a number of ways to pay the UIF contributions, including Stop Order, Direct Bank Deposit, or Internet Banking. Each bank has a specific account number allocated for UIF payments. Find FNB, ABSA, Nedbank and Standard Bank UIF account numbers here or contact your bank.
It is employers’ responsibility to deduct money from their workers and pay it and their own contributions to the UIF. Each month UIF will post you payment advice forms. It is also your responsibility to fill in these forms and send them back to UIF.
