MTN, Cell C, Vodacom and Virgin are the mobile operators and offer a variety of contract, pay-as-you go and 3G services to clients.

Generally contract rates are less than prepaid rates (except for Virgin, where they are the same). Virgin is the newest operator on the South African market and currently offers the lowest calling rates, lowest phone prices and the best transparency of package deals. Rates of MTN, Vodacom and Cell C are roughly comparable,  although the endless number of packages make any definite comparisons virtually impossible.

The best 3G packages are offered by Vodacom. Virgin does not offer 3G, but has an alternative offering called Edge, which is inferior to 3G and suitable for very light browsing.

Your passport, proof of residential address, latest bank statements and salary slips will be required when signing up for a contract deal with any of the mobile operators. Amazingly enough, if you (or your spouse) do not have a regular income in South Africa - even if your bank account boasts millions of rands - you do not qualify for a contract and will have to do with buying prepaid airtime.

Airtime can be purchased at most supermarkets, CNA, Musica, mobile operator outlets as well as online or via sms from the operator directly.
