Cape Quarter

72 De Waterkant St, Green Point

De Waterkant is the most charming, romantic part of central Cape Town. Cape Quarter used to be one of Cape Town's the best kept secrets, but with the area going through a highly accelerated renaissance it is a secret no more.

Cape Quarter is located in the heart of de Waterkant. Its small central piazza offers a relaxed retail environment with a number of good restaurants, home decor, art and artefacts, fashion, beauty, health and lifestyle related stores all delivered in a unique Cape Malay architecture.

There is a number of great boutiques scattered around Cape Quarter. Find a nice sunny morning to stroll the area and discover some of its hidden treasures.

There is a small basement parking at Cape Quarter, and some limited street parking.

Garden Centre
Corner Mill and Buitenkant Streets, Gardens

Gardens centre is an old, smallish mall which likes to think of itself as a cozy neighborhood marketplace and an antidote to large commercialized shopping malls. Truth is, it is old, the mix of shops is a bit strange, Woolies is infuriatingly small (although there is a Pick'n'Pay as well), and they close at 6pm (not 9 like all other malls) but somehow the parking is never empty. This can possibly be due to presence of a FANTASTIC German butcher and deli, Raith Gourmet, which on its own makes Gardens Centre well worth visiting.

Canal Walk/Century City
Century City N1, turn-off Century City, Milnerton

Canal Walk (also known as Century City) is also home to a mix of more than 30 casual restaurants and cafés. You will also find 17 Nu Metro cinemas including the luxury Cinema Prive complex and the Science Centre. There is a large fast food court with choices from Chinese to frozen yogurt, and entertainment area for kids with all sorts of activities.

Canal Walk can get quite busy on weekends. Parking is usually never a problem being almost as big as the mall itself, but do yourself a favor and STAY AWAY from mid December until Christmas Day.

Cavendish Square
Between Main Road, Cavendish Street and Vineyard Street, Claremont

This is award winning shopping centre located in the hart of the affluent Southern Suburbs. It is home to over 200 of the most elite stores in the country, including nice boutiques, jewelry, bookshops, restaurants, bistros and a cinema complex.

Cavendish is the best place in Cape Town to shop for clothes, shoes and home decor. Grocery shopping is limited to a large Woolworths (which houses a very popular Woolworths Cafe).

Avoid Cavendish on Saturdays and Sundays, especially in summer. It becomes very crowded and parking (even though it is very large) can be a nightmare.

Tyger Valley Centre
Willie van Schoor Avenue, Bellville (about 30 Km from the city centre) N1 turn-off Durbanville Rd (Exit 25), then left.

Tyger Valley is one of the largest and oldest malls in Cape Town and the signs of time do show here and there (especially compared to the very modern Willowbridge Mall across the street) but it is still a favorite of many local Afrikaans customers. Here you will find cinemas, restaurants, bookshops, banks, clothing stores, jewelers, sports articles, household ware and appliances, toys, photo and computer. Big parking area.

Somerset Mall

Corner of N2 and R44, Somerset West

Recently expanded and upgraded, Somerset Mall is without doubt the Helderberg's premier shopping and entertainment destination. Wide walkways welcome visitors and, in spite of the extent of the complex, browsing is made effortless by the fact that there is single-level access to every one of the 204 shops and services. The only downside is that it will take you at least 45 minutes to get to it from central Cape Town.
