Health care system

South Africa has a private and a public health care system with a great difference in standard between the two. Public health care is renowned for its poor service and long waiting lists for specialist treatments, especially in the rural areas.  Private health care is perhaps costly but offers excellent service and is of high quality. This has not gone unnoticed by people living abroad who fly to South Africa for relatively cheap operations. The private sector serves only 20% of the population – those who can afford private health insurance.
