South Africa has no shortage of reputable companies offering private health insurance. Some of the bigger names include Discovery Health, Momentum Health, Genesis, Oxygen, Pro Sano and some others.

When comparing policies of different companies, take your time to check exactly what is included and what is not. It’s highly recommended for instance that your insurance in South Africa includes cover for private emergency services. Beware of companies that reserve the right to end your policy unilaterally. Also check whether you’re required to pay doctor bills in advance and claim reimbursement or whether an insurance company pays bills directly. Also check whether you can access your profile and track your claims online. Before you decide to sign up with a certain health insurance company, ask around for other peoples experiences.

Apart from South African insurance companies, you can also consider signing up with an international company such as Health Care International (www.healthcareinternational.com), Globalsurance (www.globalsurance.com) or International Health Insurance (www.ihi.com). Your own private health insurance might extent to South Africa too.
