The biggest emergency service is Netcare911 (www.netcare911.co.za), a private 24h emergency medical assistance that will respond to any emergency call, also from non-members. Some medical schemes offer Netcare cover, which is worth considering. South Africa’s state emergency services are overstretched, making Netcare911 a much needed alternative.

Some areas have their own emergency medical and paramedic services. Camps Bay has a free medical service called Camps Bay Community Medics - 021 438 (HELP) 4357 which operates in the area from Llandudno to Fresnaye. Because these paramedics are based in Camps Bay, they have a 3-10 minute response time. They will stabilize patients and call the ambulance (as the ambulance normally takes an hour to respond).
