Provided you have private health care you will be well taken care of when pregnant in South Africa. You can either choose between a midwife and a gynaecologist, depending on your personal preference. Most gynaecologists will want to see you every month for a check up and will make an ultrasound every time you visit. After giving birth, you'll stay two nights in the hospital, considered that everything is well with you and the baby.
The rate of caesareans (c-sections) in private hospitals is very high, especially compared to public hospitals. Most hospitals will provide you with the percentage of c-sections over the past months if you're interested. On request they will also show you around their maternity ward.
For information on antenatal classes consult your gynaecologist or midwife.
After you baby is born, the hospital will refer you to a paediatrician for the first few check-ups. Healthy babies will be monitored and vaccinated at baby clinics around town, please see the (incomplete) list below.
